Beautiful Isn’t Enough. Here’s What Actually Makes People Buy.

The Big Reframe

Your products are admired. But admired and bought are two very different verbs. Here’s the gap – and how to close it.

There’s a word that changed how I see every handmade brand I work with: desirability. Not beauty. Not quality. Not even uniqueness – though all of those matter. Desirability. The quality that makes someone go from “oh, that’s lovely” to “I need that. I’m buying that. Can I get that in time for Thursday?”

Beautiful products get likes. Desirable products pay rent. And the gap between them is not the product itself – it’s the story that surrounds it, the context it lives in, and the feeling it promises.

Let me give you an example. Imagine two handmade candles. Identical quality. Identical price. But one is sold as “a scented candle with natural wax” and the other is sold as “the scent of a Kerala rain shower – for the evenings when you need to come home to yourself.” Which one are you buying?

Desirability is built through stories – the story of how the product was made, the story of who it’s for, the story of the moment it will create. In the Indian handmade space, we have stories that are centuries deep. A weave that carries a regional tradition. A clay pot shaped by hands that learned from a grandmother. A candle poured with an intention.

That story is your marketing. Your packaging is your storytelling. Your Instagram caption is a chapter. And your customer, when they share your product or gift it to someone they love, becomes the next narrator.

You already have the ingredients for extraordinary desirability. You just have to learn to put them together in a way that makes someone feel something – and then gives them the easiest possible path to buy.

Beautiful is where you start. Desirable is where the business begins.
