The Hard One
Customers can’t buy a difference they can’t see. If your edge is invisible, it doesn’t exist.
I’ll say the thing most consultants won’t: a lot of businesses have no real reason for someone to choose them. Not because they’re bad at what they do. Not because they don’t care. But because they’ve never sat down and worked out – clearly, specifically, convincingly – why their customer should pick them over everyone else.
And when the business owner doesn’t know, the salesperson doesn’t know. The marketing doesn’t know. The website doesn’t know. And most importantly – the customer definitely doesn’t know.
Purchasing decisions aren’t made on a whim. People are busy, they’re overwhelmed with options, and they’re trying to reduce the risk of making the wrong call. They need a reason. A clear, compelling, specific reason to trust you with their money and their time.
The businesses that win in noisy markets aren’t always the best. They’re the ones that are clearest. Clearest about who they serve. Clearest about the problem they solve. Clearest about what makes working with them different from every other option on the table.
That clarity is your most valuable business asset. It makes your marketing sharper, your sales conversations shorter, your pricing more defensible, and your customer relationships stronger.
Here’s the real kicker: once you find your genuine difference, everything else gets easier. Because you stop trying to appeal to everyone and start speaking directly to the people who are made for what you offer. And those people? They don’t need convincing. They just need to find you.
