Being Different Isn't a Luxury. It's Your Only Defence.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Most businesses try to be better. The best ones choose to be different. There’s a massive gap between those two strategies.

Here’s a question nobody wants to answer honestly: What do you do that your competitor doesn’t? Not better. Not cheaper. Not faster. Different. Genuinely, recognisably, unmistakably different.

Most business owners go quiet at that point. And that silence is expensive.

We live in a world of choice overload. Your customer has forty-seven tabs open. Three WhatsApp chats running simultaneously. And a decision to make about which supplier, brand, or partner to trust with their time and money. In that chaos, being slightly better than average gets you absolutely nowhere.

Think about the brands you personally love. The ones you recommend without being asked. Are they the cheapest? Probably not. Are they technically the most capable? Maybe not. But they have something that sticks – a point of view, a feeling, a way of doing things that feels like theirs and theirs alone.

That’s what Differentiation looks like in practice. It’s not a tagline. It’s not your logo. It’s the gap between what you do and what everyone else does – and how clearly you can communicate that gap to the person deciding whether to trust you.

Here’s the brutal part: if you can’t articulate your difference in one sentence, you don’t have one yet. And a business without a clear difference is just noise in a world already drowning in it.

Being different isn’t arrogance. It’s survival. It’s the one thing that cannot be commoditised. Start there. Build there. Defend it fiercely.
